ELA Literacies: How to Make the Literacy Pieces Fit Together to Make Learning Stick & Stay... for English Learners and All

Ever wonder how to make it all work in your classroom? So many “to-dos” and not enough time. Make the best of it, and approach lessons with the entire literacy framework in mind. A reading lesson does not simply involve reading and literacy is not just the elementary reading teacher’s responsibility. To get the most out of learning, include all the literacy elements to make learning stick and stay. From close reading to purposeful discourse, this workshop will address the ELA literacies with special emphasis on English learners and digital literacy.

Topics addressed, but not limited to, in this workshop include the integration of culturally responsive teaching, the SIOP model, and strategies for ELs.

Participants are asked to bring a textbook if possible so we can do an analysis of it considering ELs and
readability. Sample texts will be available, but you will find greater application when using materials that are part of your curriculum.

Our presenter Dr. Sonya Vierstraete has been teaching and learning since she was born. She is a licensed educator for more than 18 years serving in a variety of roles from middle school teacher, K-8 administrator, staff development & curriculum coordinator, head coach, adjunct professor, and currently, Chairperson and Associate professor of education

Dr. V. has her K-12 Administrative License, K-12 Reading Specialist License, K-12 Teacher of ESL License, K-6 Elementary education, and 7-12 Coaching license, which she puts to use daily with her 3 boys. She loves to read and write, and is always looking forward to her next learning adventure! In a moment of weakness last summer, her family adopted a St. Bernard whom they named

Stella and love dearly.
